John, the subject of this thoroughly entertaining memoir, has an unshakeable zest for life that literally jumps from every page. His fascinating story, based on the first 30 years of his life (1930s – 1960s) is packed with first-hand historical insights (of pre-, during and post-war Britain), and intriguing social commentary of often turbulent times. His personal experiences of the Great Depression, being a five-year-old evacuee and, like it or not, an army conscript, leave a lasting impression.

A Cockney lad, John shares memories of his difficult and somewhat unconventional early life with honesty and frankness. It's a rollercoaster ride that at times will pull on your heartstrings (he was fostered from the age of 8 months, moved from one billet to another as a child evacuee and at the age of 13 he technically 'died'). John's hilarious anecdotes and tales of his boyhood antics and escapades as a young man will have you smiling, then laughing out loud.

Discover how time and again he somehow avoided being killed by Hitler's bombs, and a near-collision between his London bus and a Jumbo Jet, and prepare to be moved as he recalls how his family coped with his mother's mental health struggles. From childhood war memories – the Doodlebugs, the death of his friend, his escapades with soldiers and POW's to the traumas, thrills and excitement of moving from adolescence to adulthood (work in the City, life in the army, success as a 'Big Band' musician, a whirlwind romance, driving a London bus, marriage and becoming dad to three children). None of it's straightforward, of it ordinary, because, as the title proclaims – You really couldn't make it up!
